Males 42

Some pre-1950 leftover bits & pieces.
The Doukhobors, or Freedomites. Often mistaken for early 20th century nudists. But maybe they were.

Males 41 – men clad in dust & grime

The hard laborers. Although ‘hard’ is relative, in this slightly silly photo…
Pyramid-building slaves, new world explorers, mountain climbers, lumber jacks, oil riggers were and are the people who literally work themselves into a sweat and develop iron hard muscles. In that regard, they represent machismo. A word that often has a romantic, adventurous sound.

Males 40 – the unintentional sensuality of war (14)

Intimacy.
Even without the smiling men in the background, I would have known this is a prank. Anyone can wash ‘n dry his own buttocks. I suppose.

The lack of physical shame in military, sports and other exlusively male environments is not so much something that goes without saying, it’s something that leads to inconsistency. Here’s another typical example of shedding shame. While at the same time we see shame nurtured.

How we lost ze war…
Off-topic, but not quite: nearly all photographs, in particular the military pictures, were taken by non-professionals. Snap shots, in fact. Theoretically all photos bear a copyright restriction. But if they are not a part of an official Documentary Archive, how to find out who owns the copyrights?
So anyone recognizing his/her grandfather/great-grandfather in one of these photographs, and considering the publication a breech of privacy, contact me, and I will remove the image.

Males 37 – the unintentional sensuality of war (10)
Enlistment Exam Day 1966. The prospect of having to live for 18 months together with a bunch of unfamiliar, rowdy, aggressive contemporaries, and quite intimately so (I heard stories from uncles and nephews), the idea scared me. But there was little rowdiness and aggression in them that day, they were all intimidated. And after a few hours, camaraderie developed. I went home in a different mood. I was hoping I hadn’t blew it:

Males 36 – the unintentional sensuality of Hazing (4)

It’s getting a bit too psychological for a series that was intended to be eye candy entertainment with-a-bit-more, but I want to finish this. It’s important to have some insight in the (nude and semi-nude) men I show in vintage and new photographs. What kind of model is Man? How’s his engine working? How powerful is his engine? What are his bugs?

Wannabe soldiers and students (wannabe professors) have a sense of humor that is stupid, banal and, yes, humorless. This particular hazing photograph however is, well, sort of funny. No, I don’t think the pilot in training really counted 1000 flight hours to his name, at least, not extern. Still the picture has the impact of a graphic war scene. Prank victim looks like he’s been dead for three weeks. I’m sure he felt that way.
But his so-called buddies will still be laughing their heads off when they are into their ripe old age. ‘Remember when we tied Patrick to the propeller and feigned to start the chopper engine and…”

Males 34 – the unintentional sensuality of Hazing (2)

Maybe I would like to, but I cannot deny that South African psychologist Judith Acer knows what she is talking about.
Even in the military, brutal initiations are controversial. Sean Renaud, a New Zealand academic who researched the Chechen wars, comments on the impact of initiation practices on the Russian army when they fought in Chechnya. Those units that had the harshest versions of initiation were the first to fall apart under enemy fire and desert. And how well did our Kamp Staaldraad warriors do in the 2003 Rugby World Cup?
Yes, the rugby results of the Springboks did not boom from their boot camp training. A training that had all the elements of a hazing.
Every year there’s a few hazings that end up in court cases, show sports coaches and army instructors and teachers getting fired from their jobs, and the odd funeral.

Males 33 – when hazing dungeons turn into boot camps….
Mrs Judith Ace and newspaper TimesLive; thank you for helping me produce a laughable post. Over your article on ‘Hazing’, you placed a MISLEADING photograph. Because of that, I could not find any information on the picture – and you and your newspaper refused answering my mails – so I wrote my own interpretation. One that appeared to be ridiculously wrong.
